The 62-year-old actor with Canadian roots made history as one of the highest-paid comedians in the world. His films, such as The Mask, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Liar Liar, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and Bruce Almighty, became iconic. In 1996, he earned $20 million for the movie The Cable Guy.
However, over time, the career of the king of Hollywood salaries began to decline, and he appeared less frequently on screen. In 2022, Jim announced his decision to retire from acting, declaring that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 would be his final film. Yet, this year, he appeared in the third installment of the franchise.
Carrey attended the London premiere of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, where he reprised his role as Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik. The actor admitted that his return to the franchise was more about replenishing his finances than his deep love for the profession. Despite once having a net worth of $300 million, he still needs to manage his expenses. For this reason, Jim has put off retirement. “I came back to this universe because, first of all, I’m playing a genius, and that’s kind of nice. Also, I bought a lot of things, and honestly, I need the money,” Carrey shared on the red carpet.
The two-time Golden Globe winner also confessed that he enjoyed the project, which is why he first appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog in 2000 and reprised the role in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in 2022. “At the same time, there was something heartfelt about it, and that’s why I did it the first time. There was something beautiful in it,” the actor noted. Jim couldn’t resist making one of his signature jokes while posing for cameras: “I hope this unites families and cures a few diseases,” he added.
A BAFTA Award nominee may improve his financial situation by selling his luxurious Los Angeles mansion, which includes a tennis court and a swimming pool. “For three decades, this place has been my refuge, but now I spend less time there. I want someone else to enjoy it as much as I have. So, cha-cha-cha, I’m ready for change in my life.”
The five-bedroom, nine-bathroom mansion was originally listed for sale in February of last year for $28.9 million. In May, Carrey lowered the price to $27 million, then to $24 million in October. By May of this year, the asking price dropped to $21.9 million, and now it’s listed at $19 million. Even with the price reduction, the actor can expect a significant profit, as he bought the property in 1994 for only $3.8 million after earning his paycheck from Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.
Carrey also owns property on Maui, including a home on the waterfront in Makena, and some of his works are displayed in the local Wayland Gallery. A significant portion of his earnings has gone into his luxury car collection, which includes a Mercedes, Porsche Panamera, Tesla, and other elite vehicles. Additionally, the actor enjoys traveling the world, indulging in life’s luxuries.
