Kate Middleton Shares Powerful New Photo of Herself, Taken by Prince Louis, 6, for World Cancer Day

Kate Middleton is sending a personal message on the eve of World Cancer Day three weeks after announcing that she is in “remission” from cancer.

World Cancer Day is observed internationally on Feb. 4, and the Princess of Wales, 43, shared the message on social media the day before. The post came with a new picture of Princess Kate standing and smiling in the woods with arms raised, with photography credit given to her son, Prince Louis, 6.

“Don’t forget to nurture all that which lies beyond the disease. C,” read the message, along with the hashtag #WorldCancerDay.

PEOPLE understands that the new picture of Princess Kate was taken by Prince Louis in Windsor, and the post included a second shot taken by the princess. The image showed a closeup of branches, also taken in Windsor.

Interspersed over it were the same words in white text: “Don’t forget to nurture all that which lies beyond the disease.”

The picture credited to Kate seemed to be zoomed-in view of ferns — a poignant plant that has inspired jewelry she reached for last year. Ferns are interpreted as a symbol of endurance, resilience and new beginnings, given its ability to flourish in diverse conditions.

The unfurling fronds represent growth and renewal, and Kate pinned on Catherine Zoraida’s Gold Fern Drop Earrings for her emotional visit to Southport in the fall. In October 2024, Princess Kate and Prince William visited the community grieving in the wake of a mass stabbing attack at a Taylor Swift-themed yoga and dance class in July, in which three young girls were killed.

The trip to Southport was the Princess of Wales’ first public engagement since she announced that she completed chemotherapy in September. Nature has long been a source of joy for the royal, especially over the past year as she navigated cancer.

The Princess of Wales was outside of the public eye for most of 2024 after announcing last March that she was undergoing treatment for cancer. In September, she shared that she completed chemotherapy and relayed on Jan. 14 with “relief” that she is in remission. That update came following her surprise stop at The Royal Marsden Hospital in London, coinciding with the confirmation that she previously received treatment there and was taking on the patronage of the hospital with Prince William.

Princess Kate is undertaking a gradual return to royal duties and traveled to South Wales last week for a set of events on Jan. 30.

Off-duty, the Princess of Wales is known to pursue a photography hobby, and the new picture of her confirms that her youngest son Louis might be following in her footsteps. The Prince and Princess of Wales are parents to Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, and the new picture of Kate is the first photo credited exclusively to Louis.
