“On April 11, I felt an awful headache and asked for aspirin. But I quickly realized: when you have a medical emergency, your friends don’t know what to do,” Foxx explained in a recording of his new stand-up routine. The 56-year-old actor confessed that he was unconscious for twenty days, and when he woke up, he found himself in a wheelchair. This marked the beginning of a long and difficult road to recovery.
Foxx described his experiences with humor, even recalling moments when he thought he saw a tunnel. “But I didn’t see any light. It was hot in the tunnel. Damn, am I going the wrong way?” he said, evoking both laughter and sympathy from the audience.
Jamie didn’t hide the fact that this experience changed his outlook on life. “God blessed me with money and fame, but when I forgot about God, He reminded me through a stroke,” the star of Django Unchained reflected. During this challenging time, Foxx found support in his family. “I was so weak after the stroke, my head kept tilting. My family was afraid they’d turn me into a meme,” Foxx said, explaining the silence from his loved ones after his hospitalization. This decision helped preserve the actor’s dignity until he was ready to share his story himself.
The road to recovery was not easy. Foxx recalled being told that he had to “kill the old Jamie for the new one to thrive.” This phrase, said by his therapist, became a true challenge and a turning point for him to rethink his life and career.
