Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively are getting more support from their friends!
As the Gossip Girl star’s legal trouble with Justin Baldoni rages on, Ryan’s co-star from Deadpool and Deadpool 2, TJ Miller, is sharing his thoughts on their viral controversy.
TJ appeared on Sunday’s episode of the Adam Carolla Show, where he was asked to comment on the actor’s head-turning SNL 50 appearance, in which The Proposal star stood up and made light of the It Ends With Us legal struggle. TJ said he hadn’t seen the clip, but after watching a bit of it, he had LOTS of thoughts!
First off, he used the opportunity to gush about his pal — who he claimed he’s gotten closer to recently despite their former feud, sharing:
“I will say over and over again, and I’ve always said this, Ryan Reynolds is so f**king funny. He is so funny. He’s one of the best improvisers I’ve ever come across in my entire life, and he’s especially as of late been a really, really good friend to me.”
So, he’s Team Ryan all day! With that in mind, TJ totally supported his friend’s decision, expressing:
“But I think, you know, you look at that, and it’s like, that’s really kind of putting yourself out there. And they obviously had a conversation where they go, well, is there a funny way to kind of deal with this? And I think there is.”
He added that he and his wife Kate Miller only “met Blake once” and that “she was nothing but sweet to Kate.” Blasting the media, the Office Christmas Party alum continued:
“I hate the media. And there’s a period after that. And I don’t think anybody should be dragged by the media. I don’t think it’s fair. I think it’s not true for the f**king almost more than most part. And I don’t think it’s healthy. I think it’s weird to watch America just pile one to this thing.”
If you don’t know, TJ has a complicated history with the media after he was canceled for a string of problematic behavior over the years — including sexual assault allegations he denied, his 2018 arrest for making a false bomb threat on a train while intoxicated, and getting axed from Silicon Valley for being an issue on set. Oof. It’s no surprise he’s blaming this all on the media then — he’s no stranger to being in the hot seat himself!
Naturally, the 43-year-old thinks this joke was the result of pressure from the internet, adding:
“But I think Ryan is somebody who is so funny that I want to watch him. He’s so watchable. […] And I think that was a good way of them handling it. But when I see something like that, I’m more like, why do they have to f**king do that? Why is the Twitter mob coming after them in such a crazy way? But, you know, they kind of engaged in it a little bit as we know, and so I don’t know. What is better […] to sort of address it head-on or just ignore it?”
For what it’s worth, Ryan did NOT have to do anything. In fact, the writers of Saturday Night Live didn’t even pitch this joke! A longtime crew member already confirmed that it was the father of four who came up with and suggested the moment. So, nobody forced this on Ryan, which is a key point.
